Bio

Alexandra Salzmann is a Toronto-based painter working in gouache, acrylic and oil, with a focus on landscapes and urban landscapes. Mostly self-taught, her practice is rooted in capturing the delight and joy of a scene with interesting light or colour relationships.

Salzmann works both on location and in the studio. Her plein-air practice is driven by a desire to feel present in a place and capture something true about it. That same attentiveness carries into her larger studio works, paintings built from bold colour relationships, textured brushwork, and an instinct for the moment that makes a place come alive.

Artist Statement

Through bold colour and textured brushwork, Alexandra Salzmann captures the moments that make a place worth remembering. A golden light in a city laneway, an afternoon in the park, a vast Canadian landscape stretching to the horizon. Her paintings find beauty and joy in the everyday, transforming ordinary scenes into something luminous and alive.

Working on location and in the studio, Alexandra paints both the urban landscapes of her home city of Toronto and the natural world beyond it. Her plein-air practice keeps her connected to the places she paints, absorbing the light, the atmosphere, and the feeling and delight of being there.
